What are the pre-requisites to join?

PADI Instructor or currently participating in an IDC or OWSI course (or completed IDC or OWSI within the last 12 months). Specialty Instructor courses without dives may be taken by PADI Assistant Instructors. Additionally, there are two Specialty Instructor courses that can be taken by PADI Divemasters (DMs attend an additional ‘Learning and Instruction Presentation for Divemasters’ module).

*CALLING ALL DMs and AIs* Did you know you can already earn some of the Specialty Instructor ratings? DMs and AIs can teach Digital Underwater Photography and Emergency Oxygen Provider after completing these Specialty Instructor courses with a PADI Course Director.

What are the performance requirements?

  1. Present a knowledge development presentation from the specialty diver course outline.
  2. State the purpose and goals of the specialty diver course.
  3. Explain the course standards and procedures from the PADI Specialty Course Instructor Guide.
  4. List student diver and instructor equipment requirements.
  5. Explain the specialty diver course open water training considerations.
  6. Demonstrate mastery of all knowledge development and water skill performance requirements for the specialty diver course.
  7. Conduct an open water teaching assignment and demonstrate all open water performance requirements for the specialty diver course.

What are the dive log requirements?

Except for courses that don’t include dives (such as Emergency Oxygen Provider), 10 logged open water dives in the specialty area are needed before certification (e.g. 10 logged dives to a wreck before being certified as Wreck Specialty Instructor). You will log 1 or 2 dives (depending on the topic) during the course and the other dives can be verified through your dive records so PLEASE BRING YOUR LOGBOOK.

How long does it take?

Depending on the specialty, the course takes 1 to 2 days.

When do you run the courses?

Specialty Instructor Courses can usually be scheduled on request. Please inquire.

What materials are required?

You will need the Specialty Instructor Guide for the specialty you have chosen. You may already have this in digital format from your IDC Crew-Pack. If not, the Specialty Instructor Guides are about 26 AUD each. Additionally, from 1st January 2013, most of the specialty courses now have mandatory PADI Manuals. If you choose specialties that have manuals then you will need these materials for use during the course and for reference afterwards. The student manuals start from about 34 AUD each (without PIC).

What about other costs?

Each Specialty Instructor application has a PADI Fee of 94 AUD.

Dive fees for any extra dives (on top of those included) you need to reach 10 logged dives in the specialty area. Please BRING YOUR LOGBOOK so we can verify your dives and therefore avoid any unecessary extra dive fees.
